A garrison town is a fortified settlement with soldiers. The Sultans seldom controlled the hinterland of the cities. Due to this, they were dependent on trade, tribute and plunder for supplies.

A city’s hinterland is a vast physical area compared to the city proper, and it performs a variety of functioix6 Its major development is governed by the economics of space. The size and complexity of the city will govern the size and complexity of its hinterland and the relationships between them.

The ‘internal’ frontier means the hinterland of the garrison town. The ‘external’ frontier means the area beyond the hinterland of the garrison towns.

Razia SultanaRazia Sultana was the first woman Sultanate of India, and ruled the court of Delhi from the end of 1236 to 1240. The only ever woman to do so, she defied all odds to occupy the throne, including overcoming conflicts over her gender and her slave ancestry.
