If used synonymously with “group,” “community”is an amorphous term. An individual is a member of many groups, thus a part of many communities. A school is a community. A neighborhood is a community.

A society is defined as a group of people sharing the same culture, interests, opinions, etc. On the other hand, a community is defined as the group of living in a social structure.

A community is a social unit (a group of living things) with commonality such as place, norms, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area (e.g. a country, village, town, or neighbourhood) or in virtual space through communication platforms.

Why are communities so important? Strong communities are critical because they’re often an important source of social connection and a sense of belonging. Participating in a community bonded by attitudes, values, and goals is an essential ingredient to enjoying a fulfilling life.

There are two types of communities Rural and Urban communities, due to different social conditions in both rural and urban areas.

1) A clear, common purpose;2) Community engagement and co- production;3) Relationships and trust; and 4) Results and accountability.

Families not only are constituent units of communities but also identify with ethnic and racial groups, social and economic classes, religious groups, etc., creating in-groups and out-groups.
